Born: 1409. Settignano Died September 23, 1464. Florence, Italy. Florentine sculptor and architect. He was an assistant to the architect Alberti for many years, and was involved in the decoration of the Florence Cathedral and the Palazzo Publico in Siena. In his "Tomb of Leonardo Bruni" (1444-50) for the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, he devised a standard form for Florentine monuments, using Donatello's skill and new clarification of composition. He also produced the wall altar for the Basilica of Sant'Egidio (1449-50). As an architect, he was responsible for the urban planning of Pienza, the construction of Palazzo Piccolomini, the design of Piccolomini Square, and the reconstruction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
