Born: January 3, 1831, Paris [Died] June 30, 1913. Aix-les-Bains. French author, journalist, and politician. He became a clerk at the Paris City Hall, but contributed to newspapers and became known as an author and playwright. In 1868, he published a weekly pamphlet called La Lanterne, but it was discontinued for satirizing the Second Empire, and he was sentenced to imprisonment, but he fled to Belgium. With the end of the Second Empire in 1870, he became a member of the National Defense Government. He was later expelled for supporting the Paris Commune, and in 1889, he was tried in absentia and permanently expelled for openly supporting General G. Boulanger.
