Manda Pond - Manda Pond

Japanese: 茨田池 - まんだのいけ

This pond was located in Ibaraki County, Kawachi Province in ancient times. It is believed to have had its water source from the rivers originating in the northern part of the Ikoma mountain range to the east. When the Yodo River flowing to the northwest overflowed, it would have flooded the land on the left bank of the Yodo River, so the Ibaraki embankment was built to prevent this, and a story about its construction appears in the Nintoku chapter of the Nihon Shoki. This tells us that the Yamato Imperial Court was proactive in developing the northern part of the Kawachi Plain. This project made it possible to turn the land into farmland, and so, drawing on their experience with reservoir irrigation in the Yamato Basin, they likely used the water from Ibaraki Pond to manage the Ibaraki Miyake storehouse.

古代，河内国茨田郡にあった池。東方の生駒山系北部に発する諸河川を水源としたとみられる。北西を流れる淀川がはんらんすると淀川左岸の地を浸すことになるので，これを防ぐため茨田堤が築かれたが，この築造に関する説話が《日本書紀》仁徳紀にみえる。これは大和朝廷が河内平野北部の開発に積極的であったことを物語る。この事業により耕地化が可能となったので，大和盆地における溜池灌漑の経験をもとに，茨田池の水利用によって茨田屯倉（みやけ）の経営に当たったのであろう。
