Structural plain (English spelling)

Japanese: 構造平野 - こうぞうへいや（英語表記）structural plain

A wide, flat lowland formed by erosion over a long period of time, when the old strata (Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata) have remained horizontal with little crustal movement. When the relatively horizontal alternating layers of hard and soft rock are eroded, the soft rock layers are denuded, revealing the flat surface of the underlying hard rock layers. They are found in continental regions where crustal movement is not intense, but do not exist in mountain-building belts such as Japan.

古い地層 (古生層，中生層) がほとんど地殻変動を受けず，水平な状態を保ち続け，長い間の浸食を受けてつくられた広い平坦な低地。比較的水平な硬軟互層が浸食されると軟弱な岩層は削剥されて下位の硬い岩層の平坦な表面が現れる。地殻運動の激しくない大陸地域に分布し，日本のような造山帯には存在しない。
