An arborescent lichen of the Usneaceae family that grows on the bark near the beech zone (illustration). It is found from Honshu to Kyushu, and further on to Taiwan, mainland China, and the Himalayas. The lichen body is thread-like, 1-2 mm in diameter, and branches vigorously from the base, becoming a shrub-like plant 5-10 cm tall. It is grayish-white or brown in color, with deep grooves all over. The symbiotic algae is a green alga. It often has dish-shaped larvae 3-8 mm in diameter near the tip. It is eaten after boiling with vinegar and soy sauce.
