1871‐1969 Belgian (Flemish) novelist. His real name was Frank Lateur. He was a leading figure in local literature and the nephew of the poet G. Hezeret. He started out as a baker, but after 1905 he devoted himself to literature. He was deeply influenced by the works of Leo Tolstoy and the Norwegian writer Björnson, who he read early on. He became famous for his collections of short stories, such as "Spring Life" (1899), "Season of the Sun" and "Summer Land" (both 1900), which depict the nature and peasant life of Flanders in a rhythmic style with strong dialectal influences.
