This article provides an overview of the characteristics and trends of art that developed in Russia from the end of the 10th century, when a certain degree of ethnic unity was achieved under Kievan Rus and Eastern Orthodoxy was established as the state religion, to the present day. Sometimes, the period before the October Revolution (1917) is referred to as "Russian art" and the period after it as "Soviet art."

Russian art began its history without any direct knowledge of ancient Greek art, after it absorbed Christian art from the Byzantine Empire at the end of the 10th century.
