This article provides an overview of music from the pre-revolutionary era of the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union. However, the former Soviet Union was home to such a diverse population that it is said to have more than 130 different languages, making it extremely difficult to understand its musical culture as a whole. The focus will be on music from the Russian Federation, which accounts for more than half of the total population, but from the Black Sea coast in the south to the Caspian coast and further east to Central Asia, the region was strongly influenced by the cultural sphere of West Asia, and an advanced court musical culture flourished there, while in the Baltic Sea coast in the northwest, German rule over the Baltic tribes continued, and the region has been in contact with European musical culture since the Middle Ages.
