Hwang Sun-won (English spelling)
1915‐2000
Korean author. Born in Daedong, South Pyongan Province. Graduated from Waseda University. In his early years, he wrote poetry, publishing the poetry collections "Song" (1934) and "Antiques" (1936). In 1940, he published a collection of stories, "Swamp," and thereafter devoted himself to novels. He is known for his fantastical, psychological, and lyrical short stories rooted in the Korean culture, including his early masterpiece, "Star" (1941). Behind this lyricism is always a vivid impression of primordial life. After liberation, he released new works one after another, along with the works he had written before liberation, and solidified his position as a full-length writer with works such as "Cain's Descendants," "Standing on the Slope of Trees," "The Sun and Moon," and "The Moving Castle."
