A species of the Lepidoptera family, Saturniidae. It is closely related to the Yamamayu but is smaller, with a span of about 120 mm. It is gray-brown in color. It is native to China, but was imported to Japan during the Meiji period because the cocoons produce high-quality silk, and is raised in parts of Nagano Prefecture. It is generally raised outdoors because it is a gregarious species with little mobility. The larvae feed on the leaves of oak trees such as Sawtooth Oak and Konara Oak, and overwinter as pupae, with adults emerging twice a year. Tussah silk is strong and lustrous, but difficult to dye.
