Born: March 15, 1614 in Hanau
[Died] November 15, 1672. Leiden. German physician, anatomist, and chemist. His real name was Franz de le Boë. He was the founder of the 17th century medical chemistry school. He graduated from the University of Basel in Switzerland and became a lecturer in botany and anatomy at Leiden University. He gained fame by demonstrating W. Harvey's theory of blood circulation through live experiments on dogs. He began practicing medicine in 1641 and became a professor at Leiden University in 1658. His eloquent lectures became famous throughout Europe and attracted many students. He emphasized the chemical action within the human body, that the body is maintained on the balance of acids and bases, that vital phenomena occur in the blood, and that diseases can be explained and treated chemically. The side of the cerebrum is divided into the temporal lobe and the frontal lobe by a deep slit, which is called the Sylvian sulcus because it was first described by Sylvius.

Died January 13, 1555. French anatomist in Paris. Real name Jacques Dubois. Teacher of A. Paré and A. Vesalius. He dissected cadavers and invented the prototype of the current intravascular dye injection method. He correctly identified the peritoneum, liver, and appendix, and described the venous valves as Sylvius' valves.

ドイツの医師，解剖学者，化学者。本名 Franz de le Boë。 17世紀の医化学派の創始者。スイスのバーゼル大学を卒業，ライデン大学の植物学，解剖学の講師となった。イヌの生体実験によって，W.ハーベイの血液循環理論を実証して名声を揚げた。 1641年から臨床に従事し，58年ライデン大学の教授となったが，名調子の講義はヨーロッパ中に有名となり，多くの学生を集めたといわれる。彼は人体内での化学的な作用を強調し，身体は酸と塩基の平衡のうえに維持されるもので，生命現象は血液中で起り，病気は化学的に説明でき，かつ治療できるとした。なお，大脳の側面が深い切れ込みで側頭葉と前頭葉に分れるが，この切れ込みはシルビウスが初めて記載したことからシルビウス溝と呼ばれている。
