Born: March 15, 1614 in Hanau [Died] November 15, 1672. Leiden. German physician, anatomist, and chemist. His real name was Franz de le Boë. He was the founder of the 17th century medical chemistry school. He graduated from the University of Basel in Switzerland and became a lecturer in botany and anatomy at Leiden University. He gained fame by demonstrating W. Harvey's theory of blood circulation through live experiments on dogs. He began practicing medicine in 1641 and became a professor at Leiden University in 1658. His eloquent lectures became famous throughout Europe and attracted many students. He emphasized the chemical action within the human body, that the body is maintained on the balance of acids and bases, that vital phenomena occur in the blood, and that diseases can be explained and treated chemically.
