Kama is an old town in Kaho District, located in the upper reaches of the Onga River in central Fukuoka Prefecture. Okuma, in the center, was a post town and market town. The town produces rice, wheat, grapes, vegetables, dairy farming, and timber. Mount Kosho in the south has karst topography and a primeval boxwood forest (a special natural monument). In March 2006, Kama merged with Yamada City, Inatsuki Town in Kaho District, and Usui Town to become a city. Area: 87.34 km2 . Population: 10,248 (2003). 福岡県中部,遠賀(おんが)川最上流部を占める嘉穂郡の旧町。中心の大隈は宿場町,市場町であった。米麦作,ブドウ・野菜栽培,酪農を営み,木材も産する。南部の古処(こしょ)山にカルスト地形とツゲの原始林(特別天然記念物)がある。2006年3月,山田市,嘉穂郡稲築町,碓井町と合併し市制,嘉麻市となる。87.34km2。1万248人(2003)。
