Six feet - Rokushaku

Six feet - Rokushaku

Abbreviation of Rokushaku fundoshi. A loincloth that is wrapped around a person and is six shaku long (180 or 220 cm long). Since the Keicho era (1596-1615), it has been widely used by nobles, samurai, and commoners alike. It was made of various materials such as habutae, crepe, satin, and donsu, and was not limited to white, but also red and navy blue, but bleached cotton was generally used. There was also a custom of presenting a loincloth to a boy who turned 8 or 9 years old from his mother's family as a "heko-iwai" (coming-of-age ceremony). It was used until the end of the Taisho era, but gradually fell out of use.

Also written as rikushaku, it generally refers to kago (palanquin) carriers, but also refers to other miscellaneous workers such as cooks and cleaners. The Edo Shogunate employed several hundred rokushaku, including 20 Momijiyama otakamori rokushaku, 388 cooks rokushaku, and 12 bathhouse rokushaku, and provided each with rice and a stipend.
