1220-63 A great ruler of medieval Russia. He became Prince of Novgorod (reigned 1236-51) and then Grand Prince of Vladimir (1252-63). Gifted with military talent, on July 15, 1240, at the age of just 20, he led a small force in a surprise attack on a Swedish army that had landed on the Neva River, routing them and earning the title Nevsky (meaning "of the Neva"). He soon fell out of favor with the city nobles and, like all the other princes, was temporarily banished from Novgorod. However, on April 5, 1242, he gained fame for his bravery in a fierce battle against the invading Teutonic Knights at the "Battle on the Ice" on the frozen Lake Chud, dealing a devastating blow to the invading army.
