Japanese: ウコギ(五加) - ウコギ（英語表記）Acanthopanax sieboldianus Makino

A deciduous shrub of the Araliaceae family thought to be native to China, but which is planted as hedges in mountain villages in Japan and sometimes grows wild. Also called Deutzia gracilis. It grows 1-2m tall, branches a lot, has needle-like thorns, and puts out roots where it touches the ground. Its leaves have 5 leaflets, are hairless, and have long petioles. In May and June, it produces umbels with long stalks at the ends of short branches, and produces many small pale green flowers. The new shoots are picked and eaten. The root bark is called gokahi and is used medicinally. Yamaukogi, Okaukogi, Urageukogi, Keyamaukogi, and Miyamaukogi are distributed in Japan and grow wild on the forest floor of secondary forests in hills and mountains.

日本では山村で生垣などに植えられ，時には野生状となっているが，中国原産と考えられるウコギ科の落葉低木。ヒメウコギとも呼ばれる。高さ1～2m，多く分枝し，枝は針状のとげがあり，地についたところから根を出す。葉は5小葉があって毛がなく，長い葉柄がある。5～6月頃，短枝の先に長い柄のある散形花序を作り，淡緑色の小さい花を多数つける。新芽をつんで食用にする。根皮は五加皮（ごかひ）といい，薬用にする。ヤマウコギ，オカウコギ，ウラゲウコギ，ケヤマウコギ，ミヤマウコギなどが日本に分布し，丘陵や山地の二次林の林床などに野生する。
