...In the dark, with the lights turned off, each person would throw the ingredients they brought into a large pot of boiling soup, then, groping around in the dark, scoop up the ingredients and eat them. This was a popular game among students in the Meiji and Taisho periods, and Masaoka Shiki often enjoyed this event at the publishing house of his haiku magazine Hototogisu.
