A tax levied by the Edo Shogunate based on the village's tariff to cover the rice allowances of various laborers (6 shaku or 13 shaku) such as palanquin carriers, cleaners, cooks, and bath heaters. It was one of the three high-ranking taxes imposed on Tenryo, along with the horse-riding inn tax and the warehouse tax. It was limited to territories directly controlled by the Shogunate, and from 1721 (Kyoho 6) it was set at 2 to per 100 koku of tariff. In 1758 (Horeki 8), it was changed to a gold tax, but later reverted to a rice tax.
