A port city on the Kattegat Strait in the northern part of the Jutland Peninsula in Denmark. It is the largest city in North Jutland, occupying the northern side of Leem Bay, with a population of 25,000 (1990). Until 1818 it was called Fladstrand. A port built by the state in 1805, it is a thriving shipbuilding and seafood processing industry. Currently, it is the ferry port to Røsø, Larvik, and Oslo in Norway, and Gothenburg in Sweden, and with the closure of the railway to Skagen, it is the northernmost terminus of the national railway on the east coast of the Jutland Peninsula.
