Killed steel

Killed steel

This steel is made by adding a small amount of silicon or aluminum after refining and just before solidifying, to convert the oxygen dissolved in the steel into a stable oxide. It was formerly called tranquilizing steel. If oxygen remains in the steel, carbon monoxide is generated during solidification, causing it to boil and sparks to fly, but if deoxidizing agents such as silicon or aluminum are added, the boiling phenomenon is not observed and the steel solidifies quietly, hence the name. Since no carbon monoxide is generated during solidification, the solidified steel ingot does not contain bubbles and is relatively homogeneous. Traces of nitrogen dissolved in the steel form iron nitrides while the steel is left, which increases the yield point of the steel, but the nitrogen in killed steel does not combine with aluminum to form iron nitrides, so killed steel has a lower yield point than rimmed steel, which is not deoxidized with aluminum, and this makes it easier to press. The homogeneous and fine material makes it strong, and it maintains its toughness even at low temperatures, so it is also used for low-temperature applications.
