Muromachi period art
This article covers art from 1338 (Engen 3/Ryakuo 1), when Ashikaga Takauji was appointed Shogun, to 1573 (Tensho 1), when the Muromachi Shogunate fell. While the art of the Kamakura period had yet to clearly replace the aristocratic tastes of the Heian period, the Muromachi period saw the development of art with a unique character, led by the aesthetic tastes of the Ashikaga Shogunate and the literati tastes of the Zen temples that had developed under the protection of the Shogunate. The coexistence and exchange of new "Han" art, which was the result of the absorption of art from the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, and traditional "Wa" art, shaped the character of Muromachi art, while at the same time gradually increasing the tendency to popularize art, reflecting the growing number of art lovers spreading to the provinces.
