Reuters, Ltd.

A leading British international news agency. Founded in London in 1851 by P. J. Reuter (1816-99). Based around an undersea cable network, it held a monopoly on international communications until the beginning of the 20th century, but in 1941 it became a trust organisation and a non-profit joint organisation with shares held by Commonwealth newspaper companies. PA, a domestic news agency made up of local newspapers, is responsible for distributing news to local newspapers in the UK and collecting domestic news for overseas markets. It has 65 domestic bureaus and around 3,000 overseas contracted companies. Although its former monopoly has collapsed, it remains well-known for its reporting on economic and diplomatic issues.
