The world's largest passenger ship, built by the British Cunard Steamship Company. Construction began in Clydebank, England in 1936, and it was launched in 1938, but in 1940 it was hastily sent to New York to avoid air raids by the German Air Force, where it was completed. It was 314m long, 35.9m wide, had a gross tonnage of 83,673 tons, was powered by a steam turbine with an output of 181,700 horsepower, had a speed of 29 knots, and could accommodate approximately 2,280 passengers. Immediately after completion, it was used as a troop transport, and in October 1946, after the end of World War II, it made its maiden voyage as a passenger ship on the North Atlantic route.
