Japanese: ハイギョ(肺魚) - ハイギョ

A general term for fish of the bony fish subclass Lungfish. They are characterized by having a well-developed swim bladder as a respiratory system. Their pectoral and pelvic fins are in a primitive state called proto-fins, and they also have internal nostrils like tetrapods, which makes them very different from other bony fish. Body length is 1 to 1.8 meters. Fossils have been found since the Devonian period, but there are five extant species in three families and three genera. Lepidosiren from South America, Neoceratodus from Australia, and Protopterus from Africa can be seen in aquariums in Japan. Protopterus burrows into the mud during the dry season, builds a cocoon out of mucus, and hibernates in it.

硬骨魚類肺魚亜綱の魚の総称。呼吸器としてよく発達したうきぶくろをもつのが特徴。胸びれ，腹びれなどは原鰭(げんき)といわれる原始的な状態にあり，また四肢動物のように内鼻孔をもつなど，一般の硬骨魚類とは大いに異なる。体長１〜1.8m。化石はデボン紀から出るが，現生種は３科３属５種。南米のレピドシレン，オーストラリアのネオセラトダス，アフリカのプロトプテルスなどは，日本の水族館でも観賞できる。プロトプテルスは乾季には泥中にもぐって粘液で繭をつくり，その中で夏眠する。
