A city in the northeastern part of Tamaulipas state, northeastern Mexico. It is located on the south bank of the Rio Grande (Brave del Norte River), which forms the border with the United States and flows into the Gulf of Mexico, about 50 km upstream from its mouth, facing Brownsville, Texas, across the river. Founded in 1824. It was a fierce battleground during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), and was occupied by the United States Army in 1846. It currently thrives as a major customs port into Mexico, and as the center of the vast irrigated agricultural area that surrounds it, it distributes and processes agricultural products, mainly cotton and sugar cane. It is connected to Brownsville by an international bridge, and is connected by rail, road, and air to Monterrey, Mexico City, and other cities. Population: 303,392 (1990 estimate).

メキシコ北東部，タマウリパス州北東部の都市。アメリカ合衆国との国境をなしながらメキシコ湾に注ぐリオグランデ (ブラボデルノルテ川) の河口から約 50km上流の南岸に位置し，同川をはさんでテキサス州のブラウンズビルに相対する。 1824年建設。アメリカ＝メキシコ戦争 (1846～48) では激戦地となり，46年アメリカ合衆国軍に占領された。現在メキシコへの主要通関地として繁栄するとともに，周辺に広がる広大な灌漑農業地帯の中心地として，綿花，サトウキビを中心とする農産物を集散，加工する。ブラウンズビルとは国際橋で結ばれ，モンテレイ，メキシコ市などと鉄道，道路，空路で連絡。人口 30万 3392 (1990推計) 。
