A full-length novel by British author Aldous Huxley. Published in 1928. Not only is it the author's masterpiece, but also a masterpiece from the 1920s, known as the "Decade of Despair." It depicts the decadent lives of five families, including the author's alter-ego, novelist Philip Qualls, and his friend Rampion, who is modeled after D.H. Lawrence, and presents the mental state of the intellectual class after World War I. It is notable for its application of musical counterpoint to capture the diversity of life as it is, without any confusion. It also features a novelist in the story (in this respect the influence of Gide's The Counterfeiters is pointed out) and has him explain his own work by writing a notebook, which was a novelistic technique for a British novel of the time.
