[1] 〘 noun 〙① A long, narrow board on which a poem or picture is painted or carved and hung on the left and right sides of a pillar or wall as a decoration. Couplet. ※Haiku, Gotei Kushu (1801), Winter "The couplets of yellow lilies are dry, and the winter trees stand." ② In Chinese poetry, the name for each pair of lines in a regulated verse. In an eight-line regulated verse, they are called the first couplet, nodding couplet, neck couplet, and tail couplet from the beginning.
