A town in Ito District, in the northeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture, occupying the Mount Koya area. The main settlement is a temple town of Kongobu-ji Temple, and has been bustling with worshippers since ancient times. The Nankai Electric Railway Koya Line and the Koya-Ryujin Skyline pass through the town, and it is part of the Koya-Ryujin Quasi-National Park, so it attracts many tourists. The town produces high-quality cedar and cypress timber, and seedling cultivation is also thriving.
