Gomel - Gomeri (English spelling) Гомель/Gomel'

The capital of Gomel Oblast in the Republic of Belarus. It is also called Gomel. It has a population of 505,300 (1998) and an urban area of ​​535,693 (estimated for 2018). The city is located on the right bank of the Sozh River, a tributary of the Dnieper River. It is an old city dating back to the mid-12th century, and is a junction of five railways, a key transportation hub with a main road and a river port. Gomel first appeared in records in 1142 under the name Gomiy, but became part of Lithuania in 1335, Poland in 1569, and Russia in 1772. Before the Russian Revolution (1917), it was a commercial city with many Jewish immigrants and no significant industry. Today, it has developed into an industrial city with heavy industry, especially machinery and metals (agricultural machinery, mining machinery, etc.), and chemical industries, as well as food processing and forestry processing. It was occupied by German troops from 1941 to 1943.

ベラルーシ（白ロシア）共和国ゴメリ州の州都。ホメリともいう。人口50万5300（1998）、都市圏53万5693（2018推計）。市街はドニエプル川の支流ソージ川右岸に発達する。12世紀中葉以来の古い都市で、5本の鉄道の分岐点であり、幹線道路と河港をもつ交通上の要衝。ゴメリは1142年にゴミーГомий／Gomiyの名で記録に現れたが、1335年にリトアニア、1569年にポーランド、1772年にロシアの一部となった。ロシア革命（1917）の前までは、ユダヤ人移住者の多い商業都市で、工業にみるべきものはなかった。現在は重工業、とくに機械・金属（農業機械、鉱山機械など）、化学工業が発達し、食品加工業、林産加工業もあり、工業都市となった。1941～1943年にはドイツ軍に占領された。
