An official in the early Heian period. The eldest son of Tanetsugu and the daughter of Awata Michimaro. His father was assassinated and his sister Kusuko was banished from the Imperial Court, and he was not blessed during the reign of Emperor Kanmu. However, after Emperor Heizei ascended to the throne, Kusuko regained favor and was appointed inspector of the Hokuriku region in 809, and councillor the following year. Together with Kusuko, he worked to restore the honor of his father, who died during the construction of Nagaoka-kyo, and after Kanmu's death, he inserted the account of Prince Sawara and Tanetsugu's incident back into the Shoku Nihongi, which Kanmu had deleted out of fear of a curse. He was arrested in the Kusuko Incident (810), imprisoned in the Uhyoe-fu, and shot to death the next day. This was the last time that the death penalty was used, and it was not until it was reinstated during the Hogen Rebellion (1156). 平安初期の官人。種継と粟田道麻呂の娘の長男。父が暗殺され,妹薬子が宮廷を追放されるなど,桓武天皇時代は恵まれなかったが,平城天皇の即位後,薬子が再び寵を得たことにより大同4(809)年北陸道観察使,翌年参議となる。薬子と共に長岡京造営中に倒れた父の名誉回復に努め,祟りを恐れた桓武が『続日本紀』から削除した早良親王と種継事件の記事を桓武没後,もと通りに挿入したこともある。薬子の変(810)で逮捕されて右兵衛府に監禁され,翌日射殺。死刑はこれを最後に保元の乱(1156)で復活されるまで途絶える。粗野で狂暴な人物と『日本後紀』は酷評。<参考文献>瀧浪貞子『平安建都』
