Leviticus - Leviticus (English spelling)

Japanese: レビ記 - レビき(英語表記)Wayiqra; Leviticus
Leviticus - Leviticus (English spelling)
One of the Pentateuch in the Old Testament. In Hebrew it is called Wayiqra (meaning "And he called") and is the third book in the Vulgate. Leviticus is essentially a book of law, but it also contains some stories (chap. 8-9, 10:1-7, 24:10-14). However, this book describes the rituals that the people of Israel were to perform in order to please Yahweh. It details the selection and form of sacrifices or offerings in burnt offerings, grain offerings, peace offerings, sin offerings, and trespass offerings, the method of consecration of priests, the cleansing of unclean persons (pregnant women, lepers, etc.), tithes, prohibition of idolatry, marriage, and the sins of adultery and murder. It contains 247 of the 613 laws in the entire Torah, and roughly the same proportion of the Talmud is based on this book.
