Born: 1919. Turin
[Died] April 12, 1987. Turin. Italian novelist. His novels, Se questo è unuomo (1947) and La tregua (63), which describe his harsh experiences at Auschwitz concentration camp and his difficult journey back to his homeland, are said to be the best documentary works of the post-World War II period. He also published, under the name Damiano Malabaila, Natural History (66), The Forms of Bad Habits (71), and Se non ora, quando? (82).

[Died] January 4, 1975. Rome Italian novelist. He initially studied medicine, but later devoted himself to painting and literature. He was exiled to Lucania by the Fascist regime in 1935-36. His novel Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (1945), which deals with this experience, has been translated into 20 languages ​​and is said to be the pinnacle of resistance literature. His other works include Paura della libertà (46) and L'orologio (50).

イタリアの小説家。初め医学を志したが,のち絵画と文学に専念。 1935~36年ファシスト政権によってルカニアに流刑された。この経験を扱った長編小説『キリストはエボリに止まりぬ』 Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (1945) は 20ヵ国語に翻訳され,レジスタンス文学の白眉といわれた。ほかに『自由の恐怖』 Paura della libertà (46) ,『時計』L'orologio (50) など。
