A deep-sea fish of the Balloonfish order and Balloonfish family. Its body is eel-shaped, but the front half of its body is thicker than the back half. Its mouth is wide and the teeth on both jaws are sharp and curved inward, and it mainly preys on fish. It has tiny eyes at the tip of the upper jaw, and even in individuals over 1 meter long, the eye diameter is only about 3 mm. Its tail fin is long and string-like, with a light-emitting organ at its tip. The dorsal and anal fins take up almost half the body length from near the center of the body to the base of the tail fin. フウセンウナギ目フウセンウナギ科の深海魚。体型はウナギ形だが,体の前半は後半部に比べ太い。口は大きく裂け,両あごの歯は鋭く内側に反っており,おもに魚類を捕食する。微小な眼が上あごの先端にあり,1mを超える個体でも眼径は3mm程度である。尾びれは紐状に長くのびその先端に発光器をもつ。背びれとしりびれは体の中央付近より尾びれの基底部まで体長のほぼ半分を占める。体表にうろこはなく,化骨の進んでいない骨格をもつ。
