Worm gear - Worm gear

A type of gear transmission. A gear with one or several screw teeth is called a worm, and is generally cylindrical in shape. The gear that meshes with this worm is called a worm wheel, and a set of a worm and a worm wheel is called a worm gear. A worm wheel has teeth similar to a helical gear, and rotates as the worm rotates. The axes of the worm and worm wheel are often at a right angle. A set of worm gears can achieve a large reduction ratio of up to about 1/300. Generally, it is not possible to transmit rotation from a worm wheel to a worm, but this is possible by increasing the helix angle.

歯車伝動装置の一種。1条または数条のねじ状の歯をもつ歯車をウォームといい、その形は一般的には円筒形である。このウォームとかみ合う歯車をウォームホイールといい、ウォームとウォームホイールの1組をウォームギヤという。ウォームホイールは、はすば歯車に似た歯溝を有しウォームの回転により回転する。ウォームとウォームホイールの軸は直角の場合が多い。ウォームギヤは1組で300分の1程度までの大きな減速比が得られる。一般には、ウォームホイールからウォームに回転を伝えることはできないが、ねじれ角を大きくすることにより可能になる。
