1894‐1954 British physicist and chemist. He studied mathematics at the University of Manchester, and after being demobilized from World War I, returned to Manchester as a lecturer in mathematics. He then moved to Cambridge University, where he studied under R.H. Fowler and obtained his doctorate in 1924. He is also known for his research on quantum statistical mechanics with Fowler, but his greatest achievement is the proposal of a semi-empirical law of intermolecular forces (the Lennard-Jones potential) based on Chapman's gas theory and the quantum mechanics of Heisenberg and Schrödinger, and by analyzing experimental data on the properties of gases and solids.
