...Its origins lie in the monthly colloquies held in 1765 by Matthew Boulton, a fastener manufacturer, E. Darwin (grandfather of C. Darwin), educator William Small, and American Franklin. Potter Wedgwood, steam engine developer Watt, chemical industry pioneer James Keir, Edgeworth, inventor of the carriage shock absorber, and gas chemistry pioneer J. Priestley joined the group, and they produced many new ideas and theories through mutual enlightenment. However, they supported the French Revolution and American independence, and strongly advocated the emancipation of slaves. As a result, they incurred the backlash of local residents, who caused them to suffer obstacles such as the burning of Priestley's house, and the group naturally died out in the early 19th century. ...
