Also known as Aratsu, she is the queen of the underworld in ancient Mesopotamian mythology. She rules over the land of the dead together with her husband Nergal. Nergal originally lived in heaven, but one day Ereshkigal, enraged by his rudeness, demanded that he be handed over to her. However, when Nergal arrived in the underworld, he grabbed Ereshkigal by the hair and tried to chop off her head, so Ereshkigal surrendered, handed over the rulership of the underworld to him, and became Nergal's wife.
