Hasegawa Tai

Japanese: 長谷川泰 - はせがわたい
Hasegawa Tai

Medical scientist. Born in June 1830 in Nagaoka, Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture), as the son of Chinese physician Hasegawa Sosai. In 1862 (Bunkyu 2), he became a disciple of Sato Shochu in Sakura, and later studied at the medical school under Matsumoto Ryojun. In 1869 (Meiji 2), he became a junior assistant professor at Daigaku Toko (the precursor to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo), and the following year in 1870 he became an assistant professor and later deputy director. However, he did not get along with the president, Ishiguro Tadanori, so he left and founded the Saisei Gakusha in Hongo in 1876, where he devoted himself to training medical students. As a private institution for training doctors, it had an extremely large number of students, and 9,600 people became doctors after studying at Saisei Gakusha. While serving as the school's principal, he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1890, served in the Ministry of Home Affairs, and was appointed Director of the Health Bureau in 1898. In 1902 (Meiji 35), when the Professional School Act was issued, he tried to upgrade Saisei Gakusha to a medical university, but failed, and suddenly closed the school, causing controversy. He died of colonic stenosis on March 11, 1912.
