The most common fossils of annelids are polychaetes, and the majority of fossils are the jaws, teeth, external tubes, and trace fossils of the hard parts of the body. Because the classification of these fossils is unclear, paleontology sometimes uses the term worms. In strata estimated to be from the end of the Proterozoic era in America and South Australia, tracks and burrows thought to be made by annelids have been found, and certain annelid bodies and tubes have been found in the Cambrian system in various places, and jaws and scolecodonts have been found in the Ordovician system.
