Davao - Dabao (English spelling)

Davao - Dabao (English spelling)

Davao is a port city on the west coast of Davao Bay in the southeastern part of Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines. It is located at the eastern foot of Mount Apo Volcano (2,954 meters), the highest peak in the Philippines. It has a population of 1,147,116 (2000). It is the center of industries and distribution such as wood processing, and has seen a remarkable population increase in recent years, making it the second largest city after Metro Manila. Until the 19th century, it was a remote area inhabited by the indigenous Bagobo people, but in the 20th century, the number of Christian Cebuano immigrants increased. Davao's development and Japan are deeply related. The formation of the main production area of abaca (Manila hemp) before World War II was largely due to the development of abaca plantations by the Japanese, who began to settle in earnest in 1904 (Meiji 37). In the late 1930s, about 20,000 Japanese people lived there. In February 1941 (Showa 16), the Japanese Navy occupied it, and it became a port of call for the fleet, but in May 1945, the Allied forces recaptured it. It was also an important port for shipping lauan lumber to Japan from before the war until the 1960s, and from the late 1960s, corporate banana plantations targeting the Japanese market spread. Most of the bananas imported by Japan are produced in and around Davao City. The Japanese consulate is located there.
