A shooting incident occurred on April 4, 1912, at the Lena Gold Mine in Eastern Siberia, Russia, in which miners were shot. The mine was located in the taiga on the Bitim River, a tributary of the Lena River, about 2,000 km northeast of Irkutsk. In 1908 the mine became the Lena Gold Mine Co. Ltd., with British capital invested, and major Russian banking capitalists participated in the management team. Also among the shareholders were Russian politicians such as Witte and high-ranking bureaucrats. Working conditions at the mine were extremely harsh. At the end of February 1912, a strike broke out spontaneously, and eventually all the workers (more than 6,000 people) joined. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
