1867‐1956 British painter, printmaker, and designer. Born in Bruges, Belgium, he lived in London from the age of seven. He trained under his architect father and under W. Morris. He mainly painted impressionist-style landscapes, but later received many commissions for murals and developed a stronger decorative tendency. He was commissioned to decorate S. Bing's shop in Paris, and also designed furniture and stained glass for commercial use. During World War I, he produced posters as a war artist. He was also friends with Kojiro Matsukata, and at his request, he designed the art museum he envisioned in Azabu, Tokyo (1920). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
