Damage to materials caused by physical, chemical, or biological factors. Deterioration due to physical factors refers to materials being destroyed by physical forces applied due to copying, improper shelving, etc. Chemical factors include heat, light, acids, and alkalis. These cause chemical reactions in the substances that make up the materials, leading to discoloration and deterioration of paper materials and the acetic acid smell of microfilm. Biological factors include mold and insects that appear on materials. Deterioration of materials can be caused by any one of these factors, or a combination of factors.
