A type of instrument that produces sound by rubbing the rim of a glass cup or basin with wet fingers. A representative example is the practical version invented in 1761 by B. Franklin, who lined up basins and turned them with a pedal. It produces a clear, sweet tone and was popular in Western Europe from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. Because the friction noise caused nerve damage, improvements were made to the instrument using keys, pads, and bows, but they fell out of use. Works written for this instrument include Mozart's Adagio K.617a (1791) and Beethoven's theatrical piece Leonore Prochaska (1815). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
