Western-style painter. Born in Nagaoka, Echigo Province, as the son of a feudal domain doctor. He moved to Tokyo in 1871 (Meiji 4), and the following year entered Kawakami Togai's Choka Dokigakan to study Western painting techniques. He worked at the Military Academy and also became an art professor at the Army Academy, but in 1876 he entered the Kobu Bijutsu Gakko, which was founded, and became an assistant. In 1878, after Fontanesi resigned, he left school and formed the Juichikai with Asai Chu and others. He became a member of the Ministry of Education's Art Investigation Committee. In 1887 he opened the Western-style painting school Fudosha to instruct the next generation, and in 1889 he founded the Meiji Bijutsu Kai with Asai, Matsuoka Hisashi and others, and served as a council member. He served in the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. In 1907 (Meiji 40), he became the head professor of the drawing department at Tokyo Higher Normal School, where he made a great contribution as an art educator and also served as a judge for the Bunten Exhibition. His representative works include "The Winter Cliff Statue of Kawakami," "The Cherry Blossoms of Sendai," and "The Shepherd." 洋画家。越後(えちご)国長岡に藩医の子として生まれる。1871年(明治4)上京し、翌年川上冬崖(とうがい)の聴香読画館に入り西洋画法を学ぶ。兵学寮に出仕し、また陸軍士官学校図画教授掛となるが、76年創設の工部美術学校に入学し、助手となる。78年フォンタネージの辞任後に退学し、浅井忠(ちゅう)らと十一会を結成。文部省図画取調委員となる。87年洋画塾不同舎を開いて後進を指導するほか、89年浅井、松岡壽(ひさし)らと明治美術会を結成し、評議員として尽くす。日清(にっしん)・日露の戦役に従軍。1907年(明治40)東京高等師範学校の図画科主任教授となり、美術教育家として大いに貢献したほか、文展審査員なども務めた。代表作に『川上冬崖像』『仙台の桜』『牧童』など。 [小倉忠夫] 出典 小学館 日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)について 情報 | 凡例 |
