Hroswitha von Gandersheim

Hroswitha von Gandersheim
935?-980?
Germany's first female poet. Also spelled Roswitha or Hrotsvith. A nun at Gandersheim Abbey, she wrote eight verse hagiographies, six rhyming prose plays in the style of Terence, and two historical poems in medieval Latin. Her plays, which belong to the oldest layer of Christian drama, imitate Terence, but reject his pagan immorality and focus exclusively on praising chastity, and have a strong educational intent. All of her works were forgotten except for one that was incorporated into a 12th century passion play, but were rediscovered during the humanist period.
