Ishida Mitoku

Ishida Mitoku
Year of death: July 18, 1669 (August 14, 1669)
Year of birth: Tensho 15 (1587)
A haiku poet from the early Edo period. His other names were Kendou and Tatsuan. He was from Edo. One theory is that he was born in 1588 (Tensho 16). According to "Kakushi Taiheiki," he worked at a money exchange shop in front of Tokiwabashi, but due to certain circumstances he left Edo and lived in seclusion in Sagami for a time. He later returned to Edo, where he became acquainted with Saito Tokugen and Takashima Gensatsu, and also studied under Matsunaga Teitoku, and by the end of the Kan'ei period (around 1644) he had become known as a haiku poet. He eventually became an active figure in the Edo haiku world, but he was also skilled in kyoka, and left behind the "Gogin Gashu." His son, Mita, was also known as a haiku poet. <References> Morikawa Akira, "Ishida Mita" (Meiji Shoin "Haiku Lectures" Volume 2)
