1714‐77 A representative satirist of the German Enlightenment. Born near Leipzig, he studied at a university there, became a tax official, and died in Dresden. He was a member of the Bremer Beiträger, a group of Bremen contributors, and contributed prose to their magazine satirizing the behavior of rural aristocrats and the principles of life of citizens. These were collected in Satires (1751-55) and, along with the fables of his friend Gellert, are considered to be the most widely read literary works of the time. However, his satire, which refrains from attacking political or ecclesiastical power, does not go beyond the limits of what was permitted by those authorities, namely the moral education of citizens, and lacks critical sharpness.
