One of the 39 books in the Old Testament. The Hebrew original is currently divided into two volumes following the Greek translation (Septuagint), but it was originally one book. The final form of the book was probably created after 555 BC. Its contents consist of the history of Solomon (Vol. 1-11), the history of the divided kingdoms (Israel and Judah) (Vol. 1-22, Vol. 2-1-17), and the history of the independent kingdom (Judah) (Vol. 2-18-25). Its main theme is to describe the history of the kingdom from the perspective of legalism and retribution, especially the causes of the kingdom's downfall and captivity. For example, it states that the division of the kingdom into the north and south and the downfall of the northern kingdom were retribution for Solomon and other kings not eliminating the pagan gods. Thus, all kings except David, Hezekiah, and Joshua are condemned for not following the law and for receiving retribution for it.
