Born: 20 December 1815 in Aberdeen [Died] November 29, 1897. Oxford English missionary and Chinese scholar. His Chinese name was Li Ya Ke. He initially lived in Hong Kong as the director of the An-glo-Chinese College, but later became a professor of Chinese studies at Oxford University. In addition to translating classic Confucian and Taoist scriptures into English, he also completed translations of the Records of the Buddha and the Chinese Steles of the Great Qin Dynasty. In addition to the Four Books, his English translations of the Book of Documents, the Book of Songs, and the Spring and Autumn Annals of Zuo were published as "The Chinese Classics" (8 volumes, 1861-72), and his translations of Taoist scriptures are included in F.
