Born: 20 December 1815 in Aberdeen
[Died] November 29, 1897. Oxford English missionary and Chinese scholar. His Chinese name was Li Ya Ke. He initially lived in Hong Kong as the director of the An-glo-Chinese College, but later became a professor of Chinese studies at Oxford University. In addition to translating classic Confucian and Taoist scriptures into English, he also completed translations of the Records of the Buddha and the Chinese Steles of the Great Qin Dynasty. In addition to the Four Books, his English translations of the Book of Documents, the Book of Songs, and the Spring and Autumn Annals of Zuo were published as "The Chinese Classics" (8 volumes, 1861-72), and his translations of Taoist scriptures are included in F. Müller's The Sacred Books of the East.

イギリスの宣教師，中国学者。中国名は理雅客。初め英華書院 An-glo-Chinese College院長としてホンコンに住んだが，のちオックスフォード大学中国学教授となった。儒教や道教の経典の古典的英訳を行なったほか，『仏国記』や大秦景教流行中国碑の訳も完成した。四書のほか『書経』『詩経』『春秋左氏伝』の英訳は"The Chinese Classics" (8巻，1861～72) として刊行され，道教経典訳は F.ミュラーの『東方聖書』 The Sacred Books of the Eastのなかに収められている。
