Japanese: 唱導 - しょうどう

The act of preaching Buddhist doctrine and leading people to faith. In Liang's Huijiao's "Biographies of Eminent Monks," it is said that "it is precisely by preaching the principles of the law that the minds of the people are opened," referring to the excellence of Lushan's Huiyuan. In Japan, the Agui school of Choken and the Miidera school founded by Joen are famous, and in the Genko Shakusho, Volume 29, it is written that "the chanting and performance of all things in the world is the same for both schools." At memorial services and rain-making ceremonies, they performed stories with a rhythm and many metaphors.

仏教教理を説いて人を信仰に導く行い。梁の慧皎(えこう)の《高僧伝》に〈けだし法理を宣唱して，衆心を開導す〉として，盧山の慧遠(えおん)の優れたことをいう。日本では澄憲の安居院(あぐい)流や定円を祖とする三井寺流が有名で，《元亨釈書》巻29に〈方今天下の唱演を言ふは皆二家に効(なら)ふ〉とある。追善法要や雨乞いなどの場で，節をつけて比喩を多用した語りを演じた。
